One of the most crucial challenges in modern Mediterranean urban areas is to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution towards achieving better living environments which are now burdened, given the citizens’ commuting demand, and the increasing seasonal traffic flows in MED areas. All partner territories face the problems related to high share of private car utilization, and the vast flows of visitors that put a severe strain on the urban living spaces of the Mediterranean. These facts negatively influence the quality of life of inhabitants as they are a source of intensive CO2 emissions.
In this context, new, greener, faster and more flexible transportation options with improved connectivity are needed, for the climate-friendly mobility adaptation away from private cars.
To effectively promote low-carbon solutions, the concept of mobility hubs is suggested to be emerged in the MED countries, through the GREENMO project, to achieve the concentration of public and shared travel modes while providing high-quality users’ experience.
Based on the above, the key output of the project concerns a joint Strategy for green and inclusive mobility hubs for MED (urban and interurban) areas after considering the vision, the pillars, the particular citizens’ real needs, habits and traffic culture, and the description of specific objectives tailor-made for MED public authorities.
GREENMO project will facilitate the design of a holistic approach with the involvement of stakeholders, the active inclusion of local communities and citizens, while not neglecting the touristic element as well, for the participatory assessment and promotion of mobility hubs towards climate change mitigation.
The project will address key environmental and mobility challenges aiming to explore the impact of mobility hubs as a step towards environmentally sustainable transport planning. It will adopt a holistic approach, as mentioned before, aiming to study the gap identified, by understanding better the impacts of such mobility hubs on behavior, as well as taking into account the citizens’ real needs.
